En Vogue had the 1990s hit “Whatta Man,” recorded with Salt-N-Pepa.
The song was released in 1993 on Salt-N-Pepa’s album Very Necessary and on En Vogue’s album Runaway Love. It draws from “What a Man,” a 1968 song by Linda Lyndell, and combines a hip-hop performance by Salt-N-Pepa with En Vogue’s polished R&B vocals.
En Vogue formed in Oakland, California, in 1989. The original lineup consisted of Terry Ellis, Dawn Robinson, Cindy Herron and Maxine Jones. The group became known for close harmonies, coordinated visual presentation and a repertoire that crossed contemporary R&B and pop.
Listeners sometimes attribute “Whatta Man” solely to Salt-N-Pepa because the duo’s name is prominent in the title credit. However, En Vogue supplied the featured vocal presence, and the collaboration is officially credited to both acts.
