Which Airbus aircraft family includes the A318, A319, A320 and A321?

The story behind the answer

The Airbus A320 family includes the A318, A319, A320, and A321.

These four original passenger models share a common narrow-body design and are commonly called the A320ceo family, where ceo means “current engine option.” They differ mainly in fuselage length and passenger capacity. The A318 is the shortest, the A319 is shorter than the standard A320, and the A321 is a stretched version.

The family entered service with the A320 in 1988 and became known for its digital fly-by-wire flight-control system and side-stick controllers. Airbus designed the aircraft so pilots could move between models with relatively limited additional training, an approach known as commonality.

Airbus later introduced the A320neo family, with new engines and aerodynamic improvements. The neo family includes the A319neo, A320neo, and A321neo, while the A318 did not receive a neo version. The A220 is a separate Airbus family, despite also being a single-aisle aircraft.

The name A320 family therefore refers to a closely related group, not only to the aircraft specifically called the A320.
