Which Airbus aircraft was the first to use the company’s A3XX project name?

The story behind the answer

The Airbus A380 was the aircraft developed under Airbus’s A3XX project name.

A3XX was Airbus’s internal designation for a proposed very-large commercial aircraft intended to challenge Boeing’s dominance in the largest-airliner market. The project evolved through several studies before Airbus formally launched the A380 programme in 2000.

The aircraft was initially known publicly as the Airbus A3XX during development. Airbus selected the A380 designation because the number 8 suggested the aircraft’s distinctive double-deck cross-section and was also considered culturally favourable in several Asian markets.

The A300, A330, and A340 were established production designations rather than the A3XX project. The A380 entered commercial service with Singapore Airlines in 2007.
