Which AFL club is nicknamed the Magpies?

The story behind the answer

Collingwood Football Club is the AFL club nicknamed the Magpies.

Founded in 1892, Collingwood is based in the Melbourne suburb of Collingwood and plays its home matches at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. Its black-and-white colours and magpie emblem have been central parts of the club’s identity for more than a century.

The nickname can sometimes cause confusion because several clubs have used black-and-white designs or magpie imagery in Australian sport. In the AFL, however, “the Magpies” most specifically refers to Collingwood.

Collingwood has one of the largest supporter bases in the competition and is traditionally associated with the annual Anzac Day match against Essendon. The club’s official name is the Collingwood Football Club, although fans and broadcasters commonly shorten it to Collingwood.
