Which actor provided the voice of Doc Hudson in Pixar’s Cars?

The story behind the answer

Paul Newman provided the voice of Doc Hudson in Pixar’s Cars.

Doc Hudson is the town’s respected physician and a former champion race car. His hidden past as the Fabulous Hudson Hornet gives the film a story about fame, disappointment, mentorship, and choosing how to spend life after competition. Doc initially dislikes McQueen’s arrogance but eventually helps him become a better racer and person.

Newman was a celebrated actor and an accomplished racing enthusiast. His real-world interest in motorsport made him a particularly fitting choice for the role. The film also used recordings of Newman’s voice for Doc’s final Pixar appearance before Newman died in 2008.

The character is based visually on the Hudson Hornet, a real American car associated with early-1950s stock-car racing. Doc’s career and nickname therefore connect the fictional story to genuine automotive history.
