Which actor played Rubeus Hagrid in the Harry Potter films written from J.K. Rowling’s novels?

The story behind the answer

Robbie Coltrane played Rubeus Hagrid in the Harry Potter films adapted from J.K. Rowling’s novels. He appeared as the half-giant gamekeeper and Hogwarts groundskeeper across the film series.

Hagrid is one of Harry’s earliest allies. He introduces Harry to the existence of the wizarding world, helps him obtain supplies in Diagon Alley and remains connected with Hogwarts throughout the story. Coltrane’s performance emphasized Hagrid’s warmth, loyalty and physical size.

A common mix-up is to name Richard Harris, who played Albus Dumbledore in the first two films, or Alan Rickman, who played Severus Snape. Brendan Gleeson played Alastor “Mad-Eye” Moody, another important adult character.

Coltrane played Hagrid in all eight main Harry Potter films. The role required camera techniques and large-scale visual effects to make the character appear much taller than the other actors.
