The 3DS-exclusive Smash mode based on Kirby Air Ride’s City Trial is Smash Run.
Smash Run appears in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and is not included in the corresponding Wii U version. Players explore a large, maze-like environment while fighting computer-controlled enemies and collecting power-ups. These boosts improve attributes such as speed, jump, attack, special moves, arms, and defense.
The mode borrows City Trial’s central rhythm: spend a preparation period gathering upgrades, then use the improved character in a final competition. Smash Run’s exploration phase lasts five minutes. When time expires, the players enter a randomly selected battle, race, or special rule set with the abilities they collected.
Smash Run is inspired by City Trial, but it is not a direct duplicate. In Kirby Air Ride, players can roam the city and interact more directly with one another while searching for machine upgrades. Smash Run emphasizes battling enemies and collecting stat boosts before its concluding contest. Smash Tour, by contrast, is the board-game-style mode associated with the Wii U version.
