Which 2016 film, written by J.K. Rowling, is set before the Harry Potter stories?

The story behind the answer

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is the 2016 film written by J.K. Rowling and set before the Harry Potter stories.

The film follows Newt Scamander, played by Eddie Redmayne, as magical creatures escape from his case in 1920s New York. It expands the Wizarding World beyond Hogwarts and introduces historical characters and conflicts that predate Harry’s school years. David Yates directed the film.

The title comes from a Hogwarts textbook mentioned in the Harry Potter novels. Rowling also wrote a companion book with that title in 2001, presented as a textbook by Newt Scamander. The 2016 movie is not an adaptation of a conventional full-length novel; it was Rowling’s original screenplay. It launched a film series that continued with The Crimes of Grindelwald and The Secrets of Dumbledore.
