Which 2016 film was written by J.K. Rowling in the Harry Potter universe?

The story behind the answer

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them was the 2016 film written by J.K. Rowling in the Harry Potter universe. It was her screenwriting debut and was directed by David Yates.

The film follows Newt Scamander, played by Eddie Redmayne, during a visit to 1920s New York. Magical creatures escape from his case, drawing him into a wider conflict involving the wizarding community and the mysterious Gellert Grindelwald.

The film shares a title with a fictional Hogwarts textbook, but it is not a direct adaptation of that short companion book. Rowling’s screenplay expanded the textbook’s fictional author, Newt Scamander, into the central character of a new film series. The later films continued the story before the events of the Harry Potter novels.
