Which 2016 film was written by J.K. Rowling as her screenwriting debut?

The story behind the answer

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them was J.K. Rowling’s screenwriting debut in 2016.

The film was inspired by the fictional Hogwarts textbook of the same name, which Rowling originally published as a charity companion book in 2001. Its screenplay expands that small in-universe book into a story about magizoologist Newt Scamander in 1920s New York City.

David Yates directed the film, and Eddie Redmayne played Newt. The production began a new film series set in the wizarding world, but decades before Harry Potter’s school years. Rowling wrote the screenplays for the later Fantastic Beasts films as well, while the Harry Potter movies were adapted from novels by screenwriters including Steve Kloves.
