Which 2016 film was based on a screenplay by J.K. Rowling?

The story behind the answer

The 2016 film based on a screenplay by J.K. Rowling was Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.

Released in November 2016, the film was Rowling’s screenwriting debut. It is set in 1926, decades before the Harry Potter stories, and follows magizoologist Newt Scamander in New York City. Eddie Redmayne plays Newt, while the cast also includes Katherine Waterston, Dan Fogler, Alison Sudol, and Colin Farrell.

The film takes its title from a Hogwarts textbook that appears in the Harry Potter books. Rowling had previously published a short charity companion book with that title in 2001, but the film is an original prequel story rather than a direct adaptation of that textbook.

The film launched a planned series about the wizarding world. Its sequels are Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald and Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore. Those films continue the earlier setting and expand the history of Gellert Grindelwald and Albus Dumbledore.
