Which 2016 film did J.K. Rowling write as a spin-off from the Harry Potter universe?
Answer
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them was the 2016 film spin-off from the Harry Potter universe written by J.K. Rowling.
Released in 2016, the film is set decades before Harry Potter’s story and follows magizoologist Newt Scamander in 1920s New York. Eddie Redmayne plays Newt, while the story expands the wizarding world beyond Hogwarts and Britain.
The film’s title resembles a Hogwarts textbook introduced in the original books. Rowling had previously published a short companion book called Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them in 2001, but the 2016 movie is a new screenplay rather than a direct adaptation of that brief textbook-style work.
The film launched a planned series and was followed by The Crimes of Grindelwald in 2018. Those titles are separate films, not alternate names for the 2016 release.
