J.K. Rowling wrote the screenplay for the 2016 film Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.

The film is set in the same wizarding world as Harry Potter but takes place decades earlier, beginning in New York City in 1926. Its central character is Newt Scamander, a British magizoologist played by Eddie Redmayne.

The title comes from a Hogwarts textbook mentioned in the Harry Potter novels. Rowling later published a short companion book under that title in 2001, credited to the fictional author Newt Scamander. The film expands that fictional reference into a new story.
