Which 2016 fantasy film had its screenplay written by J.K. Rowling?

The story behind the answer

J.K. Rowling wrote the screenplay for the 2016 fantasy film Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.

The film was her screenwriting debut and expanded the wizarding world beyond Harry Potter. Its central character is Newt Scamander, a British magizoologist who arrives in 1920s New York with a case full of magical creatures.

The movie takes its title from a fictional Hogwarts textbook that Rowling had previously published as a charity companion book. In the film, however, Newt is treated as the author of that work and becomes the lead character in a new story.

The film launched a planned prequel series set decades before Harry’s school years. Eddie Redmayne played Newt, while the story also introduced a younger version of Albus Dumbledore in later installments.
