Answer
Simmer Down
Answer
Simmer Down
“Simmer Down” was the 1963 single by The Wailing Wailers that reached number one in Jamaica. It became the group’s first major hit and is widely regarded as Bob Marley’s breakthrough recording.
Produced by Clement “Coxsone” Dodd and released through Studio One, the song features the Wailers alongside members of the Skatalites. Its ska arrangement is much faster and brighter than the roots reggae sound later associated with Marley. The lyrics address Jamaica’s “rude boys,” urging them to cool their tempers amid violence in Kingston’s poorer neighborhoods.
The record was released in 1963 and topped Jamaica’s popular music charts in February 1964. At the time, the Wailers’ lineup included Bob Marley, Bunny Wailer, Peter Tosh, Junior Braithwaite, Cherry Smith, and Beverley Kelso. A common mix-up is confusing this early chart-topper with later Marley staples such as “One Love” or “Trench Town Rock,” which belong to different stages of his career.
