Where was J.K. Rowling’s first Harry Potter idea conceived, according to her biographies?

The story behind the answer

J.K. Rowling conceived the first Harry Potter idea on a train from Manchester to London.

The journey took place in 1990, when Rowling was travelling from Manchester to London. She later recalled that the character of Harry Potter and the basic idea of a school for young wizards came to her during the delayed train trip. She did not have a pen available, so she spent much of the journey imagining details rather than immediately writing them down.

This origin story is often simplified into the phrase “a delay on a train,” but the important locations are Manchester and London. The idea did not become a finished novel immediately. Rowling began drafting the first book after moving to Portugal, continued writing in Edinburgh, and eventually completed the manuscript while living in Scotland.

The first Harry Potter book was published seven years after that journey. The train anecdote is therefore the beginning of the series’ creative history, not the date of publication or the place where the manuscript was completed.
