When did women's ski jumping debut at the Winter Olympics?

The story behind the answer

Women’s ski jumping debuted at the Winter Olympics in 2014.

The first Olympic women’s ski-jumping competition was the normal hill individual event at the Sochi Games in Russia. Carina Vogt of Germany won the inaugural gold medal, followed by Austria’s Daniela Iraschko-Stolz and France’s Coline Mattel.

Women had competed internationally in ski jumping for decades before the Olympic debut. The inclusion of the event expanded the Olympic program and gave elite women jumpers a permanent place on the sport’s largest stage.

The competition was held on the normal hill rather than the large hill. Men’s ski jumping had been part of the Winter Olympics since 1924, but women’s participation took much longer to reach the Games. Mixed-team ski jumping was later added at the 2022 Beijing Olympics.
