The first Need for Speed game was released in 1994. Originally titled The Need for Speed, it debuted on the 3DO before later versions reached other platforms.
Electronic Arts developed the project with Distinctive Software, a Vancouver-based studio that EA acquired in 1991 and renamed EA Canada. The game aimed for a more realistic driving experience than many arcade racers of its era, helped by a collaboration with Road & Track magazine. That partnership contributed licensed cars, performance information, and detailed vehicle presentation.
The original 3DO release arrived on December 2, 1994. MS-DOS and Windows versions followed in 1995, while PlayStation and Sega Saturn editions arrived in 1996. Regional naming can create confusion: in Japan, the game was released under the Over Drivin' name.
Later Need for Speed games became famous for illegal street racing, customization, and police pursuits, but the first title leaned more heavily toward realistic road racing and automotive simulation. Those later features evolved over several sequels rather than defining the series from its first release.
