What year was the first Madden NFL game released?

The story behind the answer

The first Madden NFL game was released in 1988. Titled John Madden Football, it debuted for the Apple II and was developed and published by Electronic Arts.

The game’s road to release took several years. EA founder Trip Hawkins approached John Madden in 1984, hoping to create a realistic football simulation. Madden insisted that the game represent real football, including 11 players on each team, even though computer limitations made that difficult. Development delays earned the project the internal nickname “Trip’s Folly.”

The 1988 version did not yet have official NFL licensing, so it lacked authentic team names, player names, and stadiums. It focused instead on play design, customizable game conditions, fatigue, injuries, and penalties. Later versions expanded the series, with a 1990 Sega Genesis release helping establish Madden as an annual console franchise.

A common mix-up is confusing the release year with the game’s later ports: the Apple II version arrived in 1988, while Commodore 64 and MS-DOS versions followed in 1989.
