The Madden NFL series surpassed $4 billion in lifetime sales in 2013.
By 2013, Electronic Arts reported that Madden NFL had sold more than 100 million copies and generated over $4 billion in total sales revenue. That milestone demonstrated how the series had grown from a specialist football simulation into one of the biggest annual sports-game franchises in entertainment.
The franchise began with John Madden Football in 1988. Early versions emphasized realistic football strategy and required Madden’s insistence that the game accurately represent the sport, even when that made development more difficult. Annual releases, official NFL licensing, recognizable players, and expanding console audiences helped drive its long-term commercial success.
The figure refers to cumulative lifetime revenue at that point, not the sales of one game or one calendar year. It also should not be confused with unit sales: the same 2013 reporting placed lifetime unit sales above 100 million. The franchise continued growing afterward, with later reports citing substantially higher lifetime sales and revenue.
