Rugrats first premiered on Nickelodeon in 1991. Its debut episode aired on August 11 of that year, making it one of the original Nicktoons that established Nickelodeon’s animation identity.
The series was created by Arlene Klasky, Gábor Csupó, and Paul Germain through their animation company, Klasky Csupo. It followed Tommy Pickles, Chuckie Finster, twins Phil and Lil DeVille, and their toddler friends as ordinary experiences became huge adventures through their imaginations.
A common mix-up is confusing Rugrats’ premiere with its later production history. New production paused after the initial run, then resumed with a new writing staff in 1996. The original series ultimately ran until 2004, producing 172 episodes across nine seasons.
Rugrats debuted alongside Doug and The Ren & Stimpy Show during Nickelodeon’s launch of its Nicktoons brand. It was the second of those three shows to air, after Doug, and became one of the network’s defining animated franchises.
