What year did Bob Marley receive the United Nations Peace Medal?

The story behind the answer

Bob Marley received the United Nations Peace Medal in 1978.

More precisely, he received the Peace Medal of the Third World during a reception at New York's Waldorf Astoria on 15 June 1978. The recognition followed his public advocacy for peace, justice and unity during a period of severe political violence in Jamaica.

Earlier that year, Marley had returned to Jamaica for the One Love Peace Concert. During the performance, he brought Prime Minister Michael Manley and opposition leader Edward Seaga onstage and joined their hands, creating one of the most famous images in Jamaican political history.

The award is sometimes confused with Marley's later honours. He received Jamaica's Order of Merit in 1981, was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994, and received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2001. The medal, therefore, belongs to the 1978 period of his peace and reconciliation work, not to the final year of his life.
