What was the working title of Pixar’s Toy Story before it was called Toy Story?

The story behind the answer

Pixar’s Toy Story was once developed under the working title You Are a Toy.

The phrase comes from the early concept of Buzz Lightyear confronting Woody and insisting that Woody is merely a toy. It captures the story’s central conflict: Woody understands the rules of toy life, while Buzz initially believes he is an actual space ranger stranded on an unfamiliar planet.

Toy Story developed from Pixar’s earlier short film Tin Toy and from a proposed television special featuring the character. During production, the project changed substantially in tone and story structure before becoming Pixar’s first feature film.

You Are a Toy is not the title of a released Toy Story film, short, or soundtrack. It is generally identified as an early working title, so it should not be confused with the later catchphrase “You are a toy!” spoken by Woody to Buzz.
