What was the stage name of Neville Livingston, a founding member of The Wailers? His stage name was Bunny Wailer.
Born Neville O'Riley Livingston in 1947, he grew up partly in Nine Mile, Saint Ann Parish, where he became friends with Bob Marley. In 1963, Livingston, Marley and Peter Tosh formed the core of the group that became The Wailing Wailers and eventually The Wailers. The trio became central figures in reggae's international rise.
Bunny Wailer was not merely a backing vocalist. He sang lead on some Wailers recordings, wrote songs and brought a strongly spiritual perspective shaped by Rastafari. He left the group in 1973 as Marley increasingly became its international focal point, then developed a successful solo career in roots reggae.
The name can cause confusion because Livingston was also known as Bunny Livingston, Bunny O'Riley and Jah B. “Bunny Wailer” is the canonical stage name used in biographies and music history. He won three Grammy Awards and remained one of reggae's most important standard-bearers until his death in 2021.
