What was the stage name of Aston Barrett, the bassist of The Wailers?
Answer
Family Man
Answer
Family Man
Aston Barrett’s stage name was Family Man.
Barrett was born Aston Francis Barrett in Kingston, Jamaica, in 1946. He became one of reggae’s most important bassists, first working with his brother Carlton Barrett and later playing with Bob Marley and the Wailers. His deep, steady bass lines helped define the group’s sound, while he also contributed to arrangements and production.
“Family Man” was more than a casual nickname: Barrett adopted it as part of his musical identity before he had children. The name also suited his leadership role within the Wailers’ extended musical circle. He was sometimes called “Fams” or “Familyman,” and publications vary slightly in whether they use one word or two.
A common mix-up is confusing him with Peter Tosh or Bunny Wailer, who were singers, songwriters, and founding members of the Wailers. Barrett was the bassist and musical director, while his brother Carlton supplied the group’s characteristic drumming. Barrett died in 2024 at age 77.
