What was the original title of the Harry Potter series' first United States edition?

The story behind the answer

The original title of the first United States edition was Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone.

The British edition, published in 1997, was titled Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. Scholastic changed the title for the American market before publishing the book in 1998, believing that “sorcerer” would be more immediately understandable and attractive to American children.

The story itself is essentially the same in both editions, but some vocabulary was adjusted between British and American versions. For example, “jumper” became “sweater” in places.

The two titles refer to the same legendary object: the stone associated with Nicolas Flamel, which can produce the Elixir of Life and transform any metal into gold.
