What was the original title of the first Harry Potter book in the United States?

The story behind the answer

The original United States title of the first Harry Potter book was Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone.

In the United Kingdom and many other markets, the novel is titled Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. Scholastic, the American publisher, changed “Philosopher” to “Sorcerer” before publication because editors believed the word might be less familiar or less appealing to American children. The story and characters remained the same.

The US edition was published in 1998, one year after the British edition. Its title change is one of the most famous examples of regional adaptation in the series. The film released in the United States also used Sorcerer’s Stone, while the British film title retained Philosopher’s Stone.

Both titles refer to the same magical object and the same first novel. “Sorcerer’s Stone” is therefore correct when the question specifies the United States, while “Philosopher’s Stone” is correct for the original British publication.
