The original British title of J.K. Rowling’s debut Harry Potter book was Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone.

Bloomsbury published the book in the United Kingdom in 1997. It is the first novel in the seven-book Harry Potter sequence and follows Harry’s discovery that he is a wizard, his arrival at Hogwarts, and his first confrontation with a mystery involving the Philosopher’s Stone.

American editions used the title Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. Scholastic changed “Philosopher” because its editors thought “sorcerer” would be clearer and more commercially appealing to US readers. Some text was adjusted as well, including terminology such as “crisps” becoming “chips.” The two titles therefore refer to the same novel, rather than separate stories or editions with different plots.
