The website J.K. Rowling launched in 2011 for Harry Potter fans was called Pottermore.
Pottermore was announced in June 2011 and opened to the public in April 2012 after an earlier limited registration period. It combined interactive readings of the Harry Potter books with new writing by Rowling, including background information about characters, places, magical customs, and the history of the wizarding world.
The site also sorted users into Hogwarts houses, assigned wand characteristics, and offered digital versions of the books through an associated store. Its launch included a “Magical Quill” challenge that gave early users access before the general opening.
In 2019, Pottermore Publishing became the digital publishing name, while the main website was redesigned and ultimately rebranded as WizardingWorld.com. This creates a common mix-up: Wizarding World is the later brand and website, but Pottermore was the original fan site launched by Rowling in 2011. The original site’s new material remains an important source for expanded canon.
