What was the name of the doctor who treated Bob Marley's cancer?

The story behind the answer

The doctor who treated Bob Marley’s cancer was Josef Issels.

Issels was a German physician who operated a clinic at Rottach-Egern, near Lake Tegernsee in Bavaria. Marley went there in 1980 after his acral lentiginous melanoma had spread. He had originally been diagnosed in 1977 after a dark lesion was found beneath a toenail, but he declined the recommended amputation because of his religious beliefs.

Issels promoted an alternative treatment known as Issels therapy, combining dietary measures, immune-focused ideas and other approaches. Marley spent several months at the clinic, but the disease continued to progress. He eventually left Germany in April 1981 while attempting to return to Jamaica; his condition deteriorated during the journey, and he was taken to a hospital in Miami.

Issels is sometimes described simply as Marley’s “cancer doctor,” but his treatment was controversial and was not an established cure. Reviews, including one by the American Cancer Society, found no reliable evidence that Issels therapy was effective. Marley died on 11 May 1981, aged 36.
