What was the name of Steve Jobs’s cancer type announced in 2004?

The story behind the answer

Steve Jobs announced in 2004 that he had a pancreatic neuroendocrine tumor.

This was a rare form of pancreatic cancer, medically distinct from the much more common pancreatic adenocarcinoma. Jobs said in July 2004 that doctors had found a cancerous tumor in his pancreas and that he had undergone surgery to remove it. The operation was a Whipple procedure.

Jobs’s cancer history is often simplified incorrectly as ordinary pancreatic cancer. The distinction matters because pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors arise from hormone-producing cells and can behave differently from pancreatic adenocarcinomas. Public accounts later described additional health complications, including a liver transplant in 2009.

Jobs continued working at Apple for years after the 2004 operation, although his health eventually led to periods of medical leave and his resignation as chief executive in August 2011. He died on October 5, 2011.
