Answer
January 27, 2010
Steve Jobs unveiled Apple’s first iPad on January 27, 2010.
The presentation took place during a special Apple event at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco. Jobs described the iPad as a device positioned between a smartphone and a laptop, designed for browsing the web, reading email, viewing photos, watching video, listening to music, playing games, and reading electronic books.
Apple announced that the first iPad models would go on sale in the United States on April 3, 2010, with Wi-Fi versions launching before Wi-Fi plus 3G versions. The tablet used a 9.7-inch multitouch display and ran a version of Apple’s mobile operating system.
A common mix-up is confusing the unveiling date with the retail release date. Jobs introduced the product in January, but customers could not buy the first Wi-Fi models until April. The iPad became a major new product category for Apple.
