Mac Tonight was McDonald’s moon-headed character used in late-night advertising.
Mac Tonight appeared in a major McDonald’s advertising campaign beginning in 1986. The character had a crescent-moon head, wore formal evening clothing, and was associated with a version of the song “Mack the Knife.” His purpose was to promote McDonald’s as a place to visit during evening and late-night hours rather than only at traditional meal times.
The character stood apart from the McDonaldland cast. Ronald McDonald and the other residents were generally presented in a children’s fantasy setting, while Mac Tonight used a more stylized musical and nightlife concept. His campaign became especially memorable because of the unusual moon design and the connection with the song.
Mac Tonight is sometimes confused with a generic “moon mascot,” but Mac Tonight is the official character name. The campaign was also the subject of a legal dispute involving Bobby Darin’s estate over the use of “Mack the Knife.” The character later became associated with McDonald’s advertising history rather than everyday current branding.
