Happy Meal was the name of McDonald’s first nationally distributed children’s meal promotion.
McDonald’s introduced the Happy Meal nationally in the United States in 1979. It combined a child-sized meal with a toy, creating a branded package designed specifically for children and families rather than simply offering a smaller adult meal.
The promotion became a major part of McDonald’s visual identity. Its colorful boxes, toy tie-ins, and changing licensed themes connected restaurant visits with collecting and play. The contents varied, but the name and basic concept remained consistent.
The Happy Meal is sometimes confused with earlier regional children’s promotions, including the Circus Wagon Happy Meal tested in St. Louis. The national 1979 rollout made the Happy Meal a standard McDonald’s offering across the United States.
