Fred Turner founded Hamburger University, McDonald’s corporate training center, in 1961.
Turner joined McDonald’s as a grill operator and became one of the company’s most influential operations leaders. Hamburger University was established to teach restaurant managers consistent methods for food preparation, service, cleanliness, and operational control.
The school helped turn McDonald’s branding promise into a repeatable customer experience. A logo or slogan could attract customers, but standardized training helped ensure that restaurants delivered similar products and service across a rapidly growing franchise network.
Ray Kroc is often credited with Hamburger University because he led McDonald’s expansion and strongly supported formal training. However, the institution was founded by Fred Turner, who later became McDonald’s chief executive and chairman.
