Speedee was the mascot that appeared on McDonald’s early packaging and signage before Ronald McDonald.
Speedee was a small chef character associated with the McDonald brothers’ Speedee Service System. The character represented fast preparation and helped communicate the restaurant’s new emphasis on quick, standardized service after the 1948 redesign.
The name was also used for the brothers’ early service concept, making Speedee both a mascot and a branding symbol. His image appeared in the restaurant’s early identity before McDonald’s shifted toward a larger cast of colorful characters for children’s advertising.
Ronald McDonald became the company’s best-known spokesperson in the 1960s, but he was not the first mascot connected with the brand. Characters such as Mayor McCheese, Grimace, and the Hamburglar came later as part of the McDonaldland campaign. Speedee is therefore best understood as an earlier symbol of speed and efficiency, not as an alternate name for Ronald.
