Who created the Big Mac for McDonald’s before it became a worldwide brand?

The story behind the answer

Jim Delligatti created the Big Mac for McDonald’s before it became a worldwide brand.

Delligatti was a McDonald’s franchisee in the Pittsburgh area who developed the sandwich in 1967. His creation used two beef patties, a middle bun layer, lettuce, cheese, pickles, onions, and the special sauce that became closely associated with the product.

The sandwich was initially tested in the Pittsburgh region before being introduced nationally in the United States in 1968. Its name and distinctive construction turned it into one of McDonald’s most recognizable product brands.

The Big Mac is sometimes mistakenly credited to Ray Kroc, but Kroc led the company rather than inventing the sandwich. Lou Groen is associated with the Filet-O-Fish instead.
