What was the name of Johnny Cash's own record label founded in 1969?

The story behind the answer

House of Cash was the name associated with Johnny Cash’s own record label, founded in 1969.

The label was part of Cash’s broader family music operation and released recordings by Johnny Cash and members of his family. Its catalog was not limited to Cash himself: artists connected with the Cash and Carter families, including June Carter Cash, Anita Carter, John Carter Cash, Carlene Carter, Rosanne Cash, and Tommy Cash, were also associated with its releases.

House of Cash was closely connected to Cash’s headquarters and museum in Hendersonville, Tennessee. The physical House of Cash opened in 1970 in a former dinner theatre and served as offices, a museum, and a base for the family’s music business. The label also used the names House of Cash Records and House of Cash Recording Studios.

American Recordings is a frequent source of confusion because it became the label for Cash’s late-career recordings with producer Rick Rubin. Columbia Records and Sun Records were important earlier labels in Cash’s career, but neither was the name of his own 1969 label.
