What was the name of J.K. Rowling’s first published Harry Potter story?

The story behind the answer

J.K. Rowling’s first published Harry Potter story was Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone.

Bloomsbury published the novel in the United Kingdom on 26 June 1997. It follows Harry’s discovery that he is a wizard, his arrival at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, and his first confrontation with the threat connected to Lord Voldemort. The book established the characters and institutions that shaped the rest of the series.

In the United States, the novel was published under the title Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. The change was made because the publisher believed “sorcerer” would be more immediately understandable to American readers. Consequently, both titles refer to the same first novel.

It was followed by Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets in 1998. The seven-book sequence concluded with Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows in 2007. The first book therefore remains the entry point for the main series, even though later stories and companion works expanded the fictional world.
