J.K. Rowling’s 2020 children’s novel released online during the COVID-19 pandemic was The Ickabog.
Rowling published the story online in installments from May to July 2020, making it available to children and families during the period of widespread lockdowns. The complete print edition followed in November 2020.
The Ickabog is a political fairy tale set in the fictional kingdom of Cornucopia. Its ruler, King Fred the Fearless, is surrounded by advisers whose lies and self-interest help create an oppressive system. Two children, Bert and Daisy, become involved in uncovering the truth behind the alleged monster called the Ickabog.
Rowling donated royalties from the book to help support groups affected by the pandemic. The novel was not part of the Harry Potter series. It was also illustrated through a children’s competition, with selected illustrations included in editions of the published book.
