Chevrolet’s short-lived two-seat roadster produced from 2003 to 2006 was the SSR.
The Chevrolet SSR was a retro-styled vehicle combining a retractable hardtop convertible with an open pickup-bed design. Its styling drew heavily on Chevrolet trucks from the late 1940s and early 1950s, while its mechanical layout was based on a modern rear-wheel-drive platform.
Production began in 2003, and the model was built at the Lansing Craft Centre in Michigan. Early SSRs used a 5.3-liter V8; later versions received a more powerful 6.0-liter LS2 V8 and a six-speed manual transmission option.
SSR stands for Super Sport Roadster. The vehicle is sometimes grouped with Chevrolet’s pickup trucks because of its cargo bed, but its two-seat convertible format and sporty equipment made it a distinctive niche model rather than a conventional work truck.
