What was the first name of the character later known as J.K. Rowling's detective Cormoran Strike?

The story behind the answer

The first name of J.K. Rowling's detective later known as Cormoran Strike is Cormoran.

Cormoran Strike is the central detective in Rowling's crime novels written under the pen name Robert Galbraith. He is a former Special Investigation Branch investigator who becomes a private detective in London. The first book, The Cuckoo's Calling, introduces him while he investigates the death of model Lula Landry.

Strike's name is unusual and is sometimes misremembered as Cormac or Cornelius. The character's full name is Cormoran Blue Strike, and he is the son of the famous rock star Jonny Rokeby and model Leda Strike. His military background includes service in Afghanistan, where he loses part of one leg.

The name Cormoran also has a literary and mythological resonance: Saint Michael's Mount folklore includes a giant named Cormoran. In the novels, however, the detective is a modern fictional investigator, not a retelling of that legend. The television adaptation Strike stars Tom Burke in the title role.
