What was the first Harry Potter film called in the United States?

The story behind the answer

The first Harry Potter film was called Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone in the United States.

In most other markets, including the United Kingdom, it was titled Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, matching the first novel’s original title. The film was directed by Chris Columbus and released in 2001, with Daniel Radcliffe as Harry Potter, Rupert Grint as Ron Weasley and Emma Watson as Hermione Granger.

The title difference originated with the American edition of Rowling’s first novel. Scholastic changed “Philosopher’s” to “Sorcerer’s” for the US market, and the film used that localized title. The story, cast and main production remain the same.

This is why references may list two titles for the first film. They identify regional releases of the same adaptation, rather than separate movies.
