What was the first Harry Potter book published in the United States called?

The story behind the answer

The first Harry Potter book published in the United States was titled Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone.

Scholastic published the American edition in 1998, one year after Bloomsbury released the British edition as Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. The story, characters, and plot are the same in both editions.

The subtitle was changed for the US market because editors felt that “sorcerer” would communicate the magical premise more immediately to American readers. Rowling accepted the change, although she later said she preferred the original title.

This difference is one of the best-known publishing distinctions in the series. It can make bibliographic lists appear to show two different first books, but the two titles identify the same opening novel.
