What was the first Fantastic Beasts film written by J.K. Rowling?

The story behind the answer

The first Fantastic Beasts film written by J.K. Rowling was Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.

Warner Bros. released the film in 2016. It is set in 1926, decades before the main Harry Potter story, and follows magizoologist Newt Scamander after magical creatures escape from his case in New York City.

The film was Rowling’s screenwriting debut. It expands on the fictional textbook of the same name, which appeared as a 2001 companion book to the Harry Potter novels. Eddie Redmayne plays Newt Scamander, while Katherine Waterston, Dan Fogler and Alison Sudol play major co-starring roles.

The film is sometimes confused with the later sequels The Crimes of Grindelwald and The Secrets of Dumbledore. It is also distinct from the Harry Potter films, which adapt Rowling’s seven novels. Although the two franchises share wizarding history and characters, the Fantastic Beasts series begins in an earlier period.
