What was the first country outside Jamaica where Bob Marley performed?

The story behind the answer

The first country outside Jamaica where Bob Marley performed was the United Kingdom.

Marley and the Wailers performed in England in 1971, before their larger international tours. The group played university and club dates there, beginning a long relationship with Britain that would shape Marley’s career. In 1972, he returned to England while touring with singer Johnny Nash and seeking a recording opportunity.

Britain became much more than an early touring stop. Marley lived in London at several points, signed with CBS Records there in 1972, and later spent an extended period in the country after the 1976 assassination attempt in Jamaica. His London exile became the setting for the recording of Exodus and helped connect Jamaican reggae with European and American audiences.

The United States is often guessed because Marley toured there extensively and later performed at venues including Madison Square Garden. Those American appearances came after the earlier English dates, so the United Kingdom remains the fair quiz answer.
