The Z/28 package first became available for the 1967 Chevrolet Camaro model year.
Chevrolet created the Z/28 to make the Camaro eligible for the Sports Car Club of America’s Trans-Am Sedan Championship. Its specification centered on a 302-cubic-inch V8, produced by combining a 327-cubic-inch block with a 283-cubic-inch crankshaft.
The package was not initially promoted as a mainstream luxury or appearance trim. It was a performance-oriented option intended to meet racing rules that limited engine displacement to 305 cubic inches. Chevrolet later made the Z/28 famous among road-going Camaro buyers, but its competition purpose came first.
The Z/28 name is sometimes written without the slash, as Z28. Chevrolet’s original designation was Z/28, and the package remained associated with Camaro performance across later generations.
