Ring was called DoorBot when its founder first appeared on Shark Tank.
Entrepreneur Jamie Siminoff presented DoorBot on Shark Tank in 2013. The product was a Wi-Fi-enabled video doorbell that let homeowners see and communicate with visitors through a smartphone. The pitch did not produce an accepted investment deal on the show.
After the appearance, Siminoff rebranded the company as Ring. The new name accompanied a broader focus on connected home-security products, including cameras, alarms, and doorbells. Amazon acquired Ring in 2018, adding the company to its smart-home and security business.
People sometimes remember the product by its later brand name and overlook the earlier DoorBot identity. Ring therefore provides a useful Shark Tank example of a company whose public profile changed substantially after its televised pitch.
