What was notable about Birmingham hosting the 2026 European Athletics Championships for Britain?
Answer
It was Britain’s first host city
Birmingham 2026 was the first time a British city hosted the European Athletics Championships.
The distinction concerns the senior outdoor European Athletics Championships. Britain had staged many important athletics competitions before Birmingham, including the 2007 European Athletics Indoor Championships and the 2018 World Indoor Championships, but the outdoor European championships had not previously been held in a British city.
Birmingham’s selection followed a council decision by the European Athletic Association in November 2022. The championships were eventually held at Alexander Stadium from 10 to 16 August 2026.
This fact is easy to mix up with Britain’s broader athletics-hosting history. The country had hosted major international meets and championships; Birmingham’s significance was specifically its status as the first British city to stage this senior outdoor European championship.
