McDonaldland was McDonald’s branded children’s advertising world.
McDonaldland was introduced in 1971 as a fictional setting populated by colorful characters connected with McDonald’s products and restaurant imagery. Ronald McDonald served as the central character, while figures such as Grimace, the Hamburglar, and Mayor McCheese appeared in commercials, packaging, and promotional materials.
The concept helped McDonald’s build a consistent fantasy setting around its family marketing. Instead of advertising only individual menu items, the company created recurring characters and locations that children could recognize across different media.
McDonaldland characters are sometimes treated as if they were all introduced at the same time, but their appearances and roles developed over several years. The branding also led to legal disputes involving the creators of the television program “H.R. Pufnstuf,” although McDonald’s continued using many of the characters in later advertising.
